It's been a long, long time since Sega made a Sonic game that A) wasn't in 3D and B) actually felt like a faithful adaptation of the original trilogy. But Sonic Mania might have done it. Based on an early look at the first stages of the first two zones in the new game, we see a remake of the very first Green Hill Zone and a new city creation, known as Studiopolis and they look phenomenal.
Firstly, Sega has done a bang up job recreating, remastering and re-bossening the first level of Green Hill Zone. It looks near identical to its original 1991 release, though this time the textures are crisper, you can use your spin attack and there is a new boss at the end - though it's not quite the one you remember.
Studiopolis hearkens back to levels like Casino Night Zone, with flashing visuals, some unique movement mechanics and some new enemies to contend with.
Even IGN's poor play in our first look at these levels doesn't take away from seeing Sonic back in his preferred dimensions and it certainly leaves us excited to see what else Sega's Sonic Team can come up with in the build up to this game's release.
Players will also get to play with new moves and attacks, from the three favourite characters from the series: Sonic, Tails and Knucklez.
