After initially blaming firmware update 3.61 for PlayStation 3 overheating while playing L.A. Noire, then backtracking and issuing a joint statement with Sony stating that they are still investigating the issue, Rockstar Games issued another joint statement today claiming that neither the firmware update nor the game are responsible for the problem; yet the reason is still unknown.
"At this time, Rockstar Games and Sony can confirm that neither LA Noire or firmware update 3.61 are causing the PS3 hardware to overheat," said Nick Caplin, Head of Communications at SCEE. "We are both committed to working hard to find solutions to this and any issues that may arise."
Caplin later noted that Sony "have not seen an increase in the number of calls we get on a normal day. There is not an issue here, especially not linking over heating to LA Noire or firmware 3.61."
"With so many PS3s in the market, the odd one is bound to overheat and for some reason this has been made to sound like an particular issue. We have not seen an increase from the normal level of calls that are received by our call centres on a daily basis."
Before denying the existence of the problem Caplin posted a reply to a user on the PlayStation blog, claiming that the L.A. Noire overheating issue was found "on other consoles as well." Of course, the only other console that can play L.A. Noire is the Xbox 360. The comment was removed later on.
