Sony has changed up its internal divisions by combining both the Computer Entertainment and Network Entertainment departments in order to create something entirely new: Sony Interactive Entertainment.
This will be a new company entirely, headquartered in San Mateo, California, but still held under the banner of Sony Corporation of America, itself under the umbrella of Sony's HQ in Japan.
The idea behind the new entity is to have a singular division that handles important gaming aspects of Sony's business, including the PlayStation 4, PlayStationVR and non-interactive entertainment (making the name feel a little redundant) like Vue.
"By integrating the strengths of PlayStation’s hardware, software, content and network operations, SIE will become an even stronger entity," said global CEO of Sony Andrew House.
This represents a big push by Sony to double down on its PlayStation developments, especially when you factor in that PSVR launches in 2016. Clearly it plans to put a lot of resources into the system and why wouldn't it, the PlayStation brand has pulled it through some tough times in recent years and the PS4 has clearly dominated this generation of home consoles.
It will be interesting to see what this change does to the way the company is run however and whether it will have any immediate impact on the PlayStation experience.
