Remember when both Microsoft and Sony reported sales statistics for their current-generation consoles? That was back when it was a two horse race, but today there's no denying that Sony has dominated this generation of console sales. Where the Xbox One is estimated to have sold somewhere south of 50 million units, Sony has just announced that it's shipped its 100 millionth console.
We do need to add the caveat here that sold and shipped are two different terms. Sold means actually sold to customers, while shipped means merely sent to retailers. But it's still an impressive figure. As Twitter user ZhugeEX points out on Twitter too, Sony has shipped 100 million PS4 units faster than two of the best selling consoles of all time, the PS2 and Nintendo Wii. That's likely because there are more gamers today than ever before, but it's still an impressive statistics that shows the PS4 is the dominant force this generation.
Microsoft will have to do a lot to draw in audiences with its next-generation offering, which is expected to launch sometime before the holiday season 2020, alongside or nearby Sony's own next-gen console, presumably called the PS5.
Nintendo doesn't need to worry so much though. Where the Wii U was a colossal flop for the company (despite having some intriguing games, as well as motion/two-screen mechanics) the Nintendo Switch is on a tear. At the time of writing it's performing exceedingly well and though sales have slowed a little in the past year, it's currently on track to outpace the PS4. We'll have to see how well Nintendo can maintain its sales in the years to come.
