Sony Launches PS3 Backward Compatibility Web Page

Sony has launched a little search engine that allows Playstation 3 owners to check Playstation and Playstation 2 games' compatibility with their new console.

The results returned are impressively detailed. For example, searching for Final Fantasy XII yielded a description saying: "The following conditions have been confirmed on PS3 System Software Version 1.80: Upon boot-up, with the PS3 resolution set to 720p or 1080i in the VSH [Display] Settings, the PS/PS2 Upscale option activated, and the PS/PS2 smoothing option set to Off, when the Introductory FMV plays, a vertical line of graphical corruption appears on the right side of the screen. All conditions have been resolved on PS3 System Software Version 1.81."

Also, at the bottom of the page, Sony says that they"are working with game publishers and peripheral manufacturers to develop the appropriate hardware to play peripheral-dedicated PS1 and PS2 games [such as Guitar Hero] on the PS3. Ultimately, however, it will be up to those companies to decide if they want to produce these peripherals to support this gameplay option."
