If there was one announcement that you could always count on delivering a home run for Square Enix, it would be that it was porting Final Fantasy VII to the PS4. Of course that would mean new graphics, perhaps akin to those that were initially shown off in a tech demo on the PS3 all those years ago. Maybe it could bring some new features or revised mechanics to make it a more modern experience.
Unfortunately, none of that happened this weekend when Sony announced that it was bringing one of the most beloved Final Fantasy games to its new-gen system, as instead of announcing an HD remake, or an updated version of the game, it instead said that it would be releasing the original PC version on it.
No mods. No tweaks. No improvements, just the original PC version. It looks as "good" as it did back then, but considering with just a few hours of tweaking you can have the original PC version working on an old gaming system, with plenty of mods making it look prettier than it will ever look on the PS4, you have to wonder why anyone would bother?
It seems at this point, no matter how much fans might wish for it, Square is just not going to remake or re-release Final Fantasy VII with improved graphics. Chances are it wouldn't make a return on it, even if it did, so it's understandable, even if it is a shame.
