If you have a super powerful PC, you could really make the most of it this week by giving Star Citizen a try for free. The long-in-development, crowd funding record breaker of a game, is free to play for the next week, running until November 4 and includes everything that has been added to the game until now, including the latest additions from Alpha 3.7: planetary caves, first-person mining, player interdiction, and mission sharing, as per Eurogamer.
Star Citizen often receives flak from gamers and critics alike, for missing its release deadline by more than half a decade and drawing in hundreds of millions of dollars from backers — most of which has been reportedly spend already and it's still not even close to a final release. It looks absolutely stunning and is arguably one of the most ambitious games ever made, despite its humble beginnings.
Proponents claim that it's a masterpiece that the developers are taking their time on. Detractors point to the game's ships which can be bought with real money for, in some cases, thousands of dollars, and suggest it's an addictive, pandering, pre-order mechanic gone haywire and that no real game will come of it.
Well, now may be a great time to prove either camp wrong, no matter how you feel. There are five ships available to fly during the free play event, although existing backers will have access to all of their fancy pre-purchased ships and upgrades.
