With 20 years of gameplay, heritage and competition behind it, Blizzard's seminal Starcraft is getting a tribute in the form of a movie this year. Alongside a series of promotional and honorific events, games and videos released throughout March, Blizzard's tribute film will look back on two decades of RTS popularity.
The short film will look at gameplay and interview some of the best Starcraft players from around the world about what it is that makes the game so popular and enduring. There will also be a number of casters, streamers and developers discussing its impact too.
"The thing that struck me, coming on to the StarCraft team, which was just the sense of community, not just the people that work on the game, but the players, the esports community, it really is something special to have continued this long," said Tim Moreten, production director at Blizzard for Starcraft 2 in a chat with PCGamesN "Almost eight years for StarCraft 2, now almost 20 years for StarCraft as a franchise - I think there is that sense of family and sense of belonging that people who are a part of that community engender and feel."
The trailer for the short film mixes in footage from the original game, its expansions Brood War, Starcraft 2, cutscenes from them all and more, showing us the long path it's taken to where it's at today. The final video will debut on March 31 following a roll out of additional content.
