Valve has released the list of the finalists for the Steam Awards 2018 and although there are a number of games on the list that you might expect, and a number of games that have won in previous years making their return, there are some fun additions which might surprise you.
Game of the year nominations are a little slanted towards AAA, which is a shame considering some of the great indie games we've had this year, but here's the list of finalists all the same.
- PLAYERUNKNOWN'S BATTLEGROUNDS
- MONSTER HUNTER: WORLD
- Kingdom Come: Deliverance
- HITMAN™ 2
- Assassin's Creed Odyssey
The best environment category is a little more varied, though several of the games have been out for years already, so it seems odd that such games would be considered relevant for this category in 2018.
- The Witcher® 3: Wild Hunt
- Subnautica
- Shadow of the Tomb Raider
- Far Cry 5
- DARK SOULS™ III
The weirdest category nominees has to be Better with Friends. While these games are all certainly better with friends, only Overcooked and Dead by Daylight could really be considered couch coop or LAN-friendly games.
- Counter-Strike: Global Offensive
- Tom Clancy's Rainbow Six® Siege
- PAYDAY 2
- Dead by Daylight
- Overcooked! 2

Looking back on these entries, it seems like a strange collection. Most of the games weren't released in 2018 and many of them are simply hugely popular, not necessarily representative of categories that they are relevant to.
What do you think of the various nominations?
