If you're looking for some new games this Winter, or need to grab a few extra digital presents for friends and family ahead of this holiday season, then today's the day to do it. Steam's Winter Sale starts on December 19 at 10AM PST, or 1PM if you're on the East Coast. For Brits like me, it's 6PM, which feels like a longer wait somehow.
Valve has had a number of sales over the past year and several in recent months, including both Summer and Halloween sales. The Winter sale, however, should be one of the largest, as few people are expected to be buying lots of games post holidays. At least for a week or two.
Although Valve has officially announced this sale, highlighting when it will go live, it hasn't made it clear what form this sale will take. It's unlikely that we'll see a return to Valve's more gamified shopping experience, where there's a convoluted story and overblown incentives for extra purchases, but there will be some elements of that. The last Steam Grand Prix sale saw a messy racing game that was quickly gamed by players so that almost everyone got free stuff.
It's stupid, but it works, apparently.
Still, whether you engage with such frivolities or not, there will be a number of great games on sale. Including, most likely, a number of the Steam award nominees, which this year include Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice, Resident Evil 2, Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order, Destiny 2, and Devil May Cry 5.
