Streets of Rage 4 nails classic series aesthetic

Classic Genesis/Mega Drive side-scrolling beat-em up, Streets of Rage, is making a triumphant comeback in its fourth iteration -- its first release in 24 years if it makes it out in 2018, or 25-years if it shows up in 2019.

Under development at a trio of studios -- Lizardcube, Guard Crush Games, and Dotemu -- the game is being created in partnership with Sega so it has that classic feel and in the first trailer for the game, we can see that the creators have nailed the aesthetic of not only the cut-scene action, but the beat-em up fighting itself. The music is on point too.

In this entry in the series, classic protagonist Axel Stone is back, although he now sports a beard and a slightly thicker mid-section owing to his more advanced years. He's joined by Blaze Fielding, the only other character to appear in all three games previously and together they're delivering a beating on the forces of... not Mr. X this time it seems.

Although the shadowy boss character at the heart of the criminal enterprise has been the main antagonist in all three previous games, this one features a lady with some snakes for arms. Because when it comes to bosses, Streets of Rage has never been too constrained by reality.

Anyone else remember battling fire breathing fat guys?

No release date or platform announcement has been made so far, but it seems likely that this game will appear across all major consoles and Steam -- it'd be perfect for the Switch.
