October 11 will see the launch of the first major expansion for Failbetter's Sunless Sea, sending players beneath the waves for the first time in the Zubmariner experience.
Sunless sea was a haunting experience before, sailing across the surface where there was at least a little light to keep the claws and tentacles of the underzee at bay, but this time you're diving right down into the deep, where only the ocean floor and the endless horrors above and around you can keep you company.
As with all Failbetter releases, the launch trailer for the upcoming expansion is incredibly vague, but that's a good thing, because discovery of the weirdness and enticing stories of the world beneath the world is what makes Sunless Sea so intriguing. It's punishingly difficult and Zubmariner will be no different we're told, but it will at least give you a chance to leave quite a legacy for your offspring, who may one day follow you down into the deep to see where their proud parentage met their end.
Will it be at the hands of a seabeast, or an ancient alien? Perhaps you'll simply run aground or run out of fuel and cannibalise your own crew for something to burn?
That's what's so great about Sunless Sea. It's Faster Than Light with the change that your crew will eat itself.
