Super Mario Run continues to be one of the most popular mobile applications in the world, having reached a massive 78 million downloads and that's without Android support! While that number is rather impressive though, only four million have paid for it, suggesting many are put off by the $10 price tag.
When it launched at the tail end of 2016, Super Mario Run became the most downloaded app ever in its first few days of launch. Other apps have of course been downloaded more over their lifetimes, but in the first few days of its launch, Super Mario Run hit 40 million downloads. However it hit a roadblock when it came to payments. Instead of demanding micro-payments every few levels, the Nintendo app looked to charge $10 after the first three levels.
While some liked that strategy, as it meant they weren't bugged later in the game, others it seemed were turned off by the hefty cost.
Still, four million paying customers isn't bad at that amount, so Nintendo has no doubt made a big profit on the game, which is much simpler than the usual content it produces. It will likely mean we see a lot more mobile releases from Nintendo in the future.
One of the biggest will of course be Super Mario Run on Android, which is set to happen in the next couple of months.
What other sort of apps can you expect Nintendo to make for smartphones in the coming year?
