Nintendo finally released its much-anticipated Super Mario mobile debut title, Super Mario Run, last week. One would wonder what can Nintendo add to the overly-simplistic genre, but that never stopped the hype from building up. Unfortunately, it looks like this Mario game isn't living up to fans' expectations.
Super Mario Run currently has an average rating of 2.5 stars on the App Store, perhaps the lowest score ever achieved by a Nintendo game. Upon further inspection it looks like players are mainly divided on Nintendo's decision to make the first few levels available for free then ask players to pay a onetime fee of $10 to unlock the full game. Some gamers are also pissed with the fact that the game require constant internet connection to play even after paying the full purchase price.
The negative sentiment surrounding Super Mario Run was reflected in Nintendo's stock price which dropped by more than 11% in the week following the game's launch. Nintendo's development partner, DeNa, was also affected and saw its stock drop by 14% over the same period.
Adding insult to injury, a Nintendo spokesman told that it has no plans to lengthen the game's life by releasing new levels or content.
Super Mario Run is currently available for iPhone and iPad through the iPad. You can download and play the first few levels for free before having to pay $10 to unlock the full game. It will be released on Android sometime in 2017.
