Tannenberg offers realistic take on WWI combat

With the next Call of Duty game heading back in time to WWII and Battlefield 1 showing the world that there is a real interest in trench warfare gameplay, there's no better time to be developing a historical shooter. That's no doubt why Tannenberg seems so likely to be well received because it takes what the others are doing and gives it a more realistic twist.

That should come as no surprise if you know the developer's previous work however. Blackmill Games, previously developed Verdun, the well received, but not exactly overly popular WWI shooter with a realistic slant. While the game didn't achieve CoD or Battlefield levels of fame though, it did have enough of an audience that the developers are putting together Tannenberg, which acts as a standalone sequel and expansion.

Tannenberg takes the war to the Eastern front, bringing the forces of Russia to the mix. In the new trailer for the game, we head to Eastern Prussia, where the Russians are bringing the fight to the Germans on an entirely new battlefield.

Indeed it's a much more open battlefield, because while there was trench warfare on the Eastern front, it wasn't quite so, entrenched, shall we say. That means the gameplay there will be much more of the faster paced, run and gun action of other shooters that gamers are used to, though it will still be unforgiving.

The game will still be the horrendous gore and fragility of human life in Tannenberg, with players battling with up to 31 other teammates in 64 player matchups across snowy landscapes, in forests and through burned villages as they look to hold the line or push back the enemy in tragic fashion.

Tannenberg is set for release sometime later this year.
