There's a third game coming to finish Cal Kestis's Star Wars tale

Investor calls are rarely exciting places to be, but they need to be watched carefully regardless, because the biggest gaming companies often let slip what they have planned for the coming year. In the latest investor call for EA, it has made it clear that a third and final entry is on the way, and will finish off Cal Kestis's dramatic storyline.

News in brief

  • A third game is on the way for Cal Kestis
  • This game will follow Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order and Star Wars Jedi: Survivor
  • The games have also done very well, reaching over 40 million players

Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order and Star Wars Jedi: Survivor were likely surprises for most people, given how good they are. We're long used to games tied into specific universes generally being, well, not great, but this brace of games from Respawn have been excellent. That quality is being rewarded with a third game, though it's quite clear this game will be the end of Cal's story, and many are speculating that the ending may not be a happy one.

It can't be understated how big of a hit this has been for EA, too. EA's entertainment and tech president Laura Miele made a lot of how many players had played both games in the series, with the results coming in at over 40 million. Large amounts of players tends to means lots of money, so the impact on EA's investors was likely not missed. The net profits from the sales of those Star Wars games, minus all the fees and similar, amounts to an astounding $5 billion.

With that in mind, it's not hard to see why EA is happy to keep the money train rolling. It does, however, beg the question of where EA might go once this particular well is dry. The Star Wars license is one with a plethora of options to choose from, and many will be keen to see Respawn take the formula they've built up with the Cal Kestis trilogy, and apply it to other areas of Star Wars. This style of game set in the time of the High Republic would be an interesting idea, or even during the Clone Wars.
