While there isn't much of an indication that Sonic is anywhere near the beloved character he was once, it turns out they're making a movie about him anyway. Helmed by Deadpool director, Tim Miller, who will be acting as executive producer, he's roped in his CG pal from Blur Studio, Jeff Fowler to direct. The project is also said to have another producer from Fast and the Furious fame, Neal Moritz and Patrick Casey and Josh Miller are writing it.
The movie is said to be a blend of live action and CGI, suggesting that somehow a CG Sonic will be interacting with real life humans - a little like Who Frame Roger Rabbit, or SpaceJam, but not as rad.
Sony Pictures is funding it and we're told those working on it are aiming for a release some time in 2018, though who will be acting in it, what the plot will be about or if it will even remotely possible of not being terrible, remains to be seen.
There are some talented people working on it, and there is a lot of experience when it comes to CGI movies with both Miller and Fowler involved, but Sonic has been very hit and miss over the years. Granted the original 1993-1994 Sonic the Hedgehog run, with Mobius and Dr Eggman was excellent, but the Adventures of Sonic released at the same time (and inexplicably ran for several years longer) was absolutely terrible... even if it is the Sonic show this writer grew up on.
Personally, I can't see this being that hot. Sonic is not a property that has translated well over the years. But perhaps I'll be proved wrong. What do you guys think?
