A number of people who previously worked for Criterion Games, the developer behind the Burnout series and many recent Need for Speed entries, have left and moved on to create their own studio called Three Fields. More excitingly though, they've announced that they're working on a new racing game, that will act as a spiritual sequel to the Burnout games.
"What sort of driving game you ask? A spiritual successor. Speed. Traffic. And Crashing. Lots and lots of crashing. #ShinyRedSomething" the group said via Twitter, though they did throw it out that they weren't sure which of the games should be considered its immediate predecessor and therefore what type of games would the final result be?
Burnout was incredibly popular, not only for its speed and ferocious pace of arcade action, but the epic crashes you could not only find yourself in, but that you could instigate them on behalf of your opponents, sending them careening into barriers, other vehicles and plenty of roadside signs.
It seems likely that any sort of game from Three Fields will have something similar as a mechanic, as well as lots of high speed racing action.
What would you like to see in a spiritual Burnout sequel?
