Nintendo has filed for a new trademark in Japan for something called "Nintendo Check-In." We don't have any official word on what this might be for as of now, but we do have a logo that sports a Mario hat and a curiously 'ticked' mustache for the silhouette.
Spotted originally by JapaneseNintendo, the trademark appears to be for an application, though whether this is something related to the Switch, its Chat App, or something else entirely remains to be seen.
There has been some suggestion that the new app could have something to do with going to real-world places and events, such as musical and stage play performances. Perhaps the new Check-In app is a way to announce your presence, or act like a digital ticket? The blobby shape of the Mario-Hatted-logo's 'face' certainly looks a little like the location blob icon on contemporary smartphones.
It's possible too that such real-world check-ins are related to the Switch too. Nintendo could have players "check-in" at various locations with their console, thereby unlocking bonuses or items for their in-game characters, perhaps working in tandem with certain businesses or events in a similar manner to Niantic's Pokémon Go which has proved so successful.
For now though we're just left to speculate. What do you think Nintendo Check-In is all about?
