Sony announced today its UMD Passport initiative which will allow PSP owners to re-purchase their UMD games as digital downloads for the upcoming PSP Vita at a discount.
UMD Passport will be made available in Japan on December 6th, 2011, exactly 11 days before the handheld's launch on December 17th.
In order to take advantage of UMD Passport, users have to download a UMD Registration Application from the PlayStation Store and use it to register their existing UMD games and applications. After that, digital download versions of those games will be available at the PlayStation Store for a cut price, ranging from ¥400 ($5.17) to ¥2400 ($31.03).
UMD Passport will support around 200 titles from 40 different companies at launch, with no word yet about expanding the list later.
