The Warcraft mod for Total War, developed by TheHappyCrusader, has been in development for a total of eight years and after that all that hard work it's almost ready for the majority of players to enjoy. Almost. It is available to download, much as it has been in earlier guises, but now it's hit beta and that means it's finally, almost ready for a full release.
Warcraft: Total War is aimed at replicating the era of Azeroth represented in Warcraft 3: Reign of Chaos and its expansion, the Frozen Throne. It includes 20 factions in total, including the Horde, Scourge and the Burning Legion and two new factions that come into play on the campaign map itself during the game.
As you might expect from a fantastical total war game, much like the recent Warhammer releases, Warcraft: Total War has all new models and animations, new skins for buildings and environment elements, new unit types like dragons and wizards, and a whole new user interface and menu system to fit the tone of the game.
As expansive as the new mod is though, PCGamer does warn that the installation process is a little on the complicated side. To do so using the CD version of the game, you have to copy the mod folder into the Medieval II Total War/mods folder after extraction. There's then a .bat file to open and a patch to install. You'll also need to move the Sega folder out of its usual placement and deactivate user account control.
