When a developer claims to be working on a free-roaming GTA-type of game, with a mature, Manhunter-type theme, we become interested; when that developer is Rockstar Games we want to throw our hands up in the air and holler "Hootenanny".
Fans of The Warriors movie, the concept upon which Rockstar's new game is based, have scanned and released images of the game, expected to launch in mid-2005 for PS2, with XBox and PC versions also expected at later dates. In Walter Hill's 1979 movie, a gang-ridden New York City is faced with all out war as The Warriors, the toughest gang of them all is falsely accused of killing gang icon and philosopher, Cyrus. The Warriors are hunted down by New York City's finest as well as an exotic variety of gangs including but not limited to, The Orphans, The Baseball Furies, The Lizzies and our personal favorites, The High-Hats.
The Warriors movie will be getting a, long overdue, remake (2006) with Tony Scott at the helm and fans begging for Ozzy Osbourne to get some part in it; Rockstar's game however, will be based on the original which has become a true cult classic. As in the film, the storyline of the game takes place at night, underground, in the sub-culture of gang warfare that rages from Coney Island to Manhattan to the Bronx. This game is as intense and stylized as the cult film it pays homage to and is expected to be every bit as violent.
