Since the original movies released all those decades ago, millions of Star Wars fans around the world have wondered what it would be like to sit inside the Millenium Falcon, or pilot a speeder bike through the forests of Endor. There's endless scenes in those movies that would be a blast(er) to be part of, but until the advent of VR, stepping into those worlds was impossible outside of our imagination.
But of course in contemporary gaming, VR is the hottest new technology, so we're not far off being able to play a VR experience within the Star Wars universe and when we do, it could look a bit like this demo put together by director Rob McLellan of Abe and Always the Sun fame, and visual effects artist Craig Stiff.
Made for the Oculus Rift and built within Unreal Engine 4, the short demonstration has the viewer taking part in some of the most iconic plot points of the (currently) six part series, including taking down an ATAT with some smart piloting.
There's even a pretty good looking interpretation of the rancor too.
The demonstration was captured entirely in-engine, though there may have been the odd after effects tweak, and was built in conjunction with Hammerhead VR, which previously produced the early Oculus demo, Undercurrent, which showed the potential for VR to instil wonder and fear, in an undersea world.
While this demo doesn't quite have the finesse of some of VR's most prominent experiences, it looks like a step in the right direction. Would you be excited for a Star Wars VR game?
