Rockstar has always been a bit weird where ports are concerned, and tends to drop them with little run-up, causing confusion and hype all around. Well, it's done it again, announcing that the original Red Dead Redemption will drop on PC this month.
News in brief
- The original Red Dead Redemption has been missing from PC for a long time
- It comes with the Undead Nightmare zombie apocalypse DLC
- Rockstar has included a lot of enhancements too
The original Red Dead Redemption has stood in the shadow of Red Dead Redemption 2 for quite a while now, with the numeral on the end of the latter game being the only indication for many that there's a prior game at all. A large part of this came down to the game being shackled to obsolete platforms, having released on PS3 and Xbox 360 in 2010, but not coming to more modern platforms until 2023. Even then, it only came to PS4 and Switch, of all consoles, depriving PC gamers of a classic. Thankfully, that self-imposed exile has come to an end, and PC gamers will soon be able to experience the game on October 29.
The game is actually a sequel to Red Dead Redemption 2, and follows John Marston as he attempts to track down the remaining members of the Van der Linde Gang. Fans of the series will be pleased to know the first game contained many elements that made the second game popular, including a sprawling open world, the Honor system, and pulse-pounding gunfights. Also included is the Undead Nightmare DLC, which takes place during a zombie apocalypse, and really shows us what we missed out on when Rockstar decided RDR2 would get no DLC.
As you might expect, it also comes with a lot of enhancements. After all, this is a game from 2010, and tweaks were needed to get it to run well on modern systems. That means you get DLSS 3.7 and FSR 3.0 support, native 4K resolution at up to 144hz, Ultrawide (21:9) and Super Ultrawide (32:9) monitor support, HDR10, and full keyboard and mouse functionality. Not bad for a console game from 2010.
Red Dead Redemption will hit Steam, Epic Game Store, and Rockstar on October 29. It will, amusingly release two days before the Horizon Zero Dawn remaster, meaning the game industry is still hellbent on overshadowing every single Horizon launch in some way.
