Free Radical, the developers behind the TimeSplitters series and the upcoming Haze, have posted a Haze FAQ on their website which claims a Wii version will not be created as the console is not powerful enough to support the game.
In a time where the worldwide gaming press seems to be under Nintendo's PR spell, a developer has cast some doubt over Wii's ability to support the big budget next-generation games. Ubisoft, the publisher behind Haze, gave us a very brief look at Haze with a teaser trailer, released during E3 2006. That video and the images released since, hint that Haze will be a true next-generation title and it seems those high standards are behind the lack of a Wii version. The actual FAQ posted on the Free Radical webpage claims:
Is there going to be a Wii version?
There are currently no plans for a Wii version of Haze. Sadly, the cutting-edge technology we're using requires more power than the Wii has available. If we could, we would.
It is hard for us to assess the validity of the information as Nintendo has been shy about revealing the final hardware specs for its new console. We are however, certain that most big developers should already know enough about the Wii to be able to decide if it can support their game. Until Free Radical can tell us exactly why the Nintendo Wii cannot support Haze we will have to accept their comment at face value. The need for a developer to justify the lack of a Wii version in its official game FAQ however, does speak volumes about the significance of the Wii in this installment of the console wars.
