Winamp is an audio player. It plays music, or any other recorded sound, on your computer. Winamp also has a number of popular plug-ins for visualization (cool effects that synchronize with the music), input, output, and other purposes. It also allows the look of its interface to be customized through the use of skins. Though Winamp is most popular as a player for MP3s (MPEG audio layer 3 files), it also supports a number of other formats.

Many input plug-ins are available to make Winamp support various formats, but support for the following formats is built-in:

MP3/MP2 (MPEG audio layers 1, 2, and 3)
MOD/S3M/XM/IT (digital synthesized music formats)
MIDI/MID (musical instrument digital interface)
WAV/VOC (digital audio file)
CDA (compact disc audio)
WMA (Windows Media Audio)
AS/ASFS (Audiosoft secure MP3 file)

Winamp 2.75:
* avs 2.4.9 (interface improvements, speedups, new dynamic movement effect (yay!))
