The Witcher III: Wild Hunt has received a total of 16 pieces of DLC over the past year and a bit, all of them free. There has been some paid for content too, but the sheer volume of regularly released free extra-bits and pieces for the game has been a massive welcome change for the owners, who like the rest of us are used to the tactics of different AAA companies giving us DLC only if we pay top dollar for it.
We're looking at you 2K Games.
CD Projekt Red, the developer of The Witcher III didn't do this because it knows giving free DLC gets you praise though, it did it because it wants to play games where they feel supported by the developers, not fleeced.
"I would really like to see such initiatives become an industry standard rather than an exception to the general rule," says co-founder of CD Projekt Red, Marcin Iwiński (via VG247).
"I hope that The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt has set a good example."
Of course not all of the content given away for free with The Witcher III were exactly game changing. There was a lot of extra aesthetic changes thrown in there too, but a lot of companies would have gleefully charged for that sort of thing.
The paid for expansions were also larger than most AAA games, so it seems fair.
