One of the six games in The Witcher universe that CD Projekt Red is set to work on over the next few years is a complete remake of the original in Unreal Engine 5. Often considered the weakest of the Witcher games, and with a combat system that leaves a lot to be desired, remastering the original title will give gamers young and old a new chance to experience it in a more visually appealing guise.
It could even end up looking better than The Witcher III.
CD Projekt Red has returned to the well with its future plans, announcing earlier this year that it was going to develop a number of new Witcher-based games, one a straight sequel to The Witcher III: Wild Hunt, and the others something else entirely. One of those, at least, will be this remake of the original, and you have to imagine if it goes well, Witcher II: Assassin of Kings will get the same treatment.
It's not being entirely developed by CD Projekt Red, though. In fact, it will only be providing assistance to the Polish Studio, Fool's Theory, which previously provided developmental support for Baldur's Gate III, Divinity: Original Sin II, and Outriders.
"The game is currently in the early stages of development at the Polish studio Fool’s Theory, where veteran Witcher series staff are involved," CD Projekt Red said in a statement. "We … are providing full creative supervision."
No release date has been announced as of yet, but expect it to be some way off.
