The X-COM style of game has lead to a lot of imitators and recreations in recent years. Xenonauts and X-COM 2 showed that there is definitely a market for grand, global strategy combined with turn-based tactical action, so it's not too surprising to learn that the creator of the original X-COM, Julian Gollop, is looking to make something for those gamers.
Phoenix Point is a spiritual sequel to the original X-COM and its sequel, Terror from the Deep. It has nasty, crab-like alien enemies that are invading from the sea, while fractured human forces look to control the land and sky. There are various human factions to deal with, as well as the alien menace, and you'll have superhuman soldiers and a variety of weapons to combat them with.
Phoenix Point is under development at Gollop's Snapshot games and is collaborating with the writers of both The Talos Principle and Elite Dangerous, as well as the composer of the original X-COM game.
Gollop's last game, Chaos Reborn, was successfully funded on Kickstarter and while he is going the crowdfunding route for Phoenix Point, he's not using the same service. This time he's using Fig, which lets gamers invest in the game as well as opt for traditional rewards.
At the time of writing he's reached just over $300,000 of the $500,000 goal, but with 42 days left it seems very likely he'll make it.
