Microsoft has revealed its next-generation console for the first time. It's called the Xbox Series X and it looks like a tall, blocky, minimalist thing. It is sure to polarise fans, who are used to more nuanced and decorative designs for the past couple of generations of Microsoft console, but in all cases it's sure to be powerful.
The next-generation Xbox console has been teased by Microsoft for some time, with the software giant giving it the codename of Project Scarlett. Set to arrive in the 2020 holiday season, the now-named Xbox Series X is an intriguing proposition from a marketing standpoint, as its name isn't catchy and its look is rather utilitarian.
Its boxy look reminds us of the last-generation Mac Pro, with a focus on vertical airflow through to a grilled-top of the system. This is presumably to improve thermals, though we do have to worry about the chance of spill damage through such a large, perforated surface.
Microsoft followed its debut of the new system with a look at the first few Xbox Series X games, including Senua Saga: Hellblade 2, a sequel to hit indie survival horror adventure, Senua's Sacrifice.
From previous announcements we know that the system will ship with a custom AMD APU that features a Zen 2 CPU core and a Navi GPU. It's also set to use a custom-made SSD for far faster load times for levels and a reduction in pop-in during high-paced games.
What do you think of the new design?
