Your mouse could be ruining your Elden Ring gameplay

A new patch for Elden Ring has been released, but FromSoft has released a warning alongside the usual bug fixes. According to them, your mouse's software could be causing framerate issues in the game, so it's a good idea to check and see what you have running in the background.

News in brief

  • Elden Ring's update 1.13 is out
  • FromSoft uses the patch to warn players about issues that could be tanking their framerate
  • The culprit is mouse software that control mouse behavior

Unstable frame rates could easily be the difference in whether you finally take down that boss that's been plaguing you, or fall victim to them once again, so it's good FromSoft is making sure to zero in on factors that could affect players. Unfortunately, while they can patch most, this one seems out of control, as it has roots in third-party software.

The patch notes make it clear: "In the PC version, unstable framerate may be caused by third-party applications that control mouse behavior. Deactivating these third-party applications may improve performance. The version number of this update shown at the lower right corner of the Title Screen will be as follows: App Ver. 1.13. Regulation Ver. 1.13.1."

It's not 100% clear what a "mouse control app" is, but it would be best to disable any apps or programs your mouse comes with, or that you're using to alter functions on your mouse, in the meantime. At the very least, try turning them off and see whether it makes a difference in your Elden Ring gameplay.

Unfortunately this isn't the only issue still affecting Elden Ring players, as many have complained of stutters and lag even without third-party mouse controlling apps installed or enabled. But even with that in mind, it's clear Elden Ring has been far from a flop recently. Building on the base game's original success, the release of The Shadow of the Erdtree DLC has been an enormous hit, with over five million copies sold. That's a lot of Untarnished running around, and a lot of deaths in the Lands Between.
