Writers and gaming experts from Cable Game TV channel G4 and Entertainment Weekly have voted for the Top 100 games of all time. The list was compiled from games of all genres, across all platforms and included titles from classic arcade machines to the latest offerings for the next generation of consoles.
The battle was fought between two of the most successful and best known gaming franchises, The Legend of Zelda and Doom. Nintendo's Zelda, is based in a Fantasy Land where a variety of adventures take place, involving magic. The latest version is currently available for the GameCube console and is called The Legend of Zelda : The Wind Waker.
Id's Doom was hailed as a revolution in gaming upon its 1993 release for the PC. At the time its graphics and innovative gameplay was considered a leap above its contemporary titles.
Zelda clinched, only just, the top spot from Doom while its developers, Nintendo together with EA accounted for 20 of the 100 titles.
The top five of this list included the, now, classic Tetris at number 3, Take Two Interactive's Grand Theft Auto III and Grand Theft Auto: Vice City at 4 and EA's Madden NFL 2003 in fifth place.
The full list will be presented every day of the week beginning on May 5th on G4.
