Remastering old classics is all the rage at the moment, so it's perhaps no surprise that an iconic title from the late 90s that appeared on PCs and consoles, Constructor, is making a comeback too.
Constructor was all about building buildings, managing stereotypical tenants and trying to rough up your competition. It was a difficult game with an often dark sense of humor, but all of that is being ported over in its HD remastering,
"Since then we’ve had lots of people saying ‘Oh I love that game’. But as Windows moved on and new operating systems made it more difficult to play the old one, we got more people telling us that they can’t play the game of their childhood anymore," said the HD development lead, John Tiddy. "It’s a game we’ve always liked and felt deserves to be remade. It felt a good idea for the current time."
What's great with this game though, is that it's being remade by Sytem 3, the company that originally put Constructor together. It also still has many of the same people on staff, so this HD remastering has much the same developers as the original had, which gives it a great chance of being a faithful recreation.
This is something they're particularly excited about too. As PCG points out, by jacking up the resolution and detail, the developers can now make the game look like it was in their heads, adding detail where it was unreadable before due to the low resolution and lack of colors.
"Now we have HD resolution screens, all the little details come through. Posters that are on the walls, subtle things like labels. We can go and put detail into those. You couldn’t actually read it on the original, whereas now you can," said Tiddy.
