Cyberpunk 2077 is done and finished, according to the game's director, Gabe Amatangelo. Speaking to Game File, Amatangelo has made it clear that as far as the studio is concerned, there will be no more major content for the game, outside of the chance additions of small features here or there.
News in brief:
-
Cyberpunk 2077 will receive no major new updates
-
Some smaller features may be pushed out over time
-
Work has shifted to Witcher 4
Cyberpunk 2077 has been through a real journey since it launched in December of 2020. Despite debuting to enormous hype, the game's condition let down a lot of people, with bugs galore and many missing promised features. Thankfully, like we've seen for games like No Man's Sky, CD Projekt RED worked hard to turn the game's condition around, fixing bugs and adding a bunch of new features. The latest and last major patch, update 2.1, added a roleplaying-focused metro system you can actually ride, on-foot radio, and other much-wanted features. This joined the DLC, Phantom Liberty, in putting the game in an end state. As it is, and outside of some small additional features that may pop up down the line, Cyberpunk 2077 is now complete.
Don't get too excited about the "small additional features" though. Amantangelo has made it clear these are on an as-and-when basis, and only when it won't impact other, more important work.
"Just because, as you're kind of messing around with stuff, sometimes you discover something that is not a high risk. Or it's easy to integrate. Or, you know, some developers have some bandwidth." Amatangelo said. "Then they bring it to me. I'm like, 'All right, well, I trust you that it isn't going to mess with your other work… So let's give it a go." So it's unlikely this will result in anything as big as the new metro system, but may be more likely to be something akin to the on-foot radio.
But what does this mean for CD Projekt RED? In short, they've moved on to other projects. The big beneficiary of the surge of manpower will be the Witcher 4, which is now the largest focus of the studio. With that on the horizon, CD Projeckt RED's fans likely won't be too upset about Cyberpunk 2077 being put out to pasture.
