While your decisions made in prior Dragon Age games may not matter enormously in Dragon Age: The Veilguard, a ray of hope does shine for fans who want those dots all lined up. According to the game devs, future Dragon Age games may have a stronger focus on the events of previous games, meaning your choices could finally matter.
News in brief
- Dragon Age: The Veilguard has only the smallest of references back to previous games
- This disappointed fans, who expected choices to matter
- Future games may reveal the larger implications of your decisions
Dragon Age: The Veilguard may have been a triumphant return for the Dragon Age series, but some elements of it have been a disappointment for fans. Namely, there isn't much in the way of callbacks to previous games. Dragon Age is a series where choices are supposed to be given weight, and what decisions you make are supposed to matter. Only, when it comes to transitioning to the next game, well, most of the time the developers have glossed over as much as possible.
To some degree, this makes sense. Accounting for every decision a player could make would mean creating an enormous amount of content, so it makes sense to limit that to the barest you can get away with. That seems to be what Veilguard has done, with players being given a few choices that echo back to previous games, but not as many as players may like.
But the developers have taken note of this, and in an interview with IGN, game director Corinne Busche and creative director John Epler promise that future games may deal more directly with previous choices.
"One thing that we could have stated more clearly, or maybe alluded to … is the idea that just because these choices from the past library of games didn't necessarily impact this particular story, that doesn't mean they're gone. This is a chance for us to really key in to what matters with these events and what's happening in Northern Thedas. I do fully expect that these choices going clear back to Dragon Age Origins will again matter."
So those are promising words for any Dragon Age fans, though it's worth taking them with a pinch of salt.
