Grand Theft Auto V has passed 205 million lifetime sales, cementing it as one of the most popular games of all time. It has become one of only two games to ever surpass 205 million in sales, but it still trails behind the ultimate leader.
News in brief
Grand Theft Auto V soars past 205 million in sales
It's only the second game to reach this high
Can Grand Theft Auto VI live up to its predecessor?
It's likely news that will come as a surprise to no-one. Grand Theft Auto V, despite releasing over 11 years ago, is still one of the most played games at any given moment. Largely thanks to its online mode, Grand Theft Auto V has stayed relevant and popular throughout the years, despite stiff competition from a number of games which could potentially have dethroned it.
205 million is a high number, for sure. It means Grand Theft Auto V has sold more copies than the PlayStation 2, which sold over 155 million consoles to become the highest selling console of all time. But it still falls short of the ultimate leader in game sales, a position taken by the mighty Minecraft, which sits at an enormous 300 million in lifetime sales.
Still, it's only the second game to reach 200 million sales, and also only the second game to reach 100 million sales, with third place being taken by Wii Sports, at just shy of 83 million. There's not much chance of a last minute surge to hit 100 million from that quarter, at least. It's a similar story for fourth place, the now largely forgotten PUBG: Battlegrounds, which dominated the battle royale space until Fortnight eventually dethroned it.
With that in mind, can the long-awaited Grand Theft Auto VI ever hope to overthrow its predecessor in sales numbers? It's not controversial to say it has an uphill struggle ahead of it. After all, 11 years of sales can cover an awful lot of gamers, and a number of which are likely to have since grown tired of the GTA formula. Still, Grand Theft Auto VI is scheduled to release in 2025, so we're sure to find out then.
