Much of the tech and gaming world were impressed when Microsoft showed off the second, real world demonstration of its Hololens augmented reality headset. It has the potential to make our homes far more digital without the need to install anything behind the walls, but that doesn't necessarily mean it won't be expensive.
In-fact the rumoured cost for the Hololens system - with a single headset - is "significantly more than a game console."
This quote comes from an unnamed Microsoft executive, who quoted the cost as likely to be more than $400 per customer. That makes it a hundred dollars or so more than Oculus' Rift headset, though it may still end up being cheaper than the HTC Vive, which comes with a headset, two base station trackers and a pair of motion controls too.
Of course a few people will buy Microsoft's product, as it is cool, but this could be the kicker when it comes to who wins the first round in the war for our eyeballs in VR.
Microsoft also doesn't have much of a history of being successful out of the gate with its hardware. So perhaps it will take a generation or two before it gets things right?
What to do you guys think? Would you spend $400 on a Hololens headset?
