Nintendo announced its upcoming console, the NX, in March right after revealing its plans to release several mobile games over the next few months. Seeing that the announcement was only meant to soothe concerns that Nintendo is moving away from console gaming, the company affirmed that it won't share any more info before next year.
But now a Japanese newspaper called Nikkei is reporting insider information that the NX will run on Android.
Nikkei actually has a solid track record when it comes to leaking Nintendo secrets. The Japanese newspaper was able to spill the beans on Nintendo's 3DS XL and its plans for mobile games well before the official announcement.
Until now, Nintendo has been using its own proprietary operating system to run its consoles. Adopting Google's popular Android OS should reduce development cost and attract more developers. Microsoft and Sony have already made a similar move with this consoles generation as they ditched proprietary hardware architecture in favor of standard X86 architecture to be more developer friendly.
