Most analysts believe that the prevalence of gaming on smartphones and tablets has made dedicated handheld consoles such as the PSP and the 3DS obsolete. Interestingly, the head of Nintendo’s Analysis and Development branch doesn’t seem to agree.
When asked about the possibility of releasing an enhanced 3DS model like it did with the original DS which was enhanced into the DS Lite, DSi and DSi XL, Shigeru Miyamoto explained that they are more focused on designing the next generation of gaming handhelds.
"I really feel like I'm satisfied with the 3DS hardware as it is. I feel like it's the best for this generation," he explained. "What we're thinking about right now is probably going to be for a future generation of handheld."
