Avengers: Age of Ultron and Jurassic World hold the record for 2015's highest opening day revenues with $84.5 and $82 million respectively. Impressive numbers, but Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain was able to beat them both put together.
According to Adobe Digital Index's report on gaming trends, The Phantom Pain made $179 million globally on launch day.
This opening day revenue alone is more than twice the game's development budget of $80 million, which only goes to show how narrow minded Konami was when it decided to cut ties with Hideo Kojima and focus on low budget mobile games.
To put the numbers in perspective Grand Theft Auto V made $815 in its opening day and Destiny made $500. Metal Gear Solid V's achievement puts it somewhere near the end of the list of the top 10 game opening days of all time. On the other hand, Age of Ultron and Jurassic World have the 2nd and 3rd highest movie opening day revenue of all time, preceded only by Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2 which made $91 million in its opening day.
