As much as the right wing media and mainstream press might (still!) like to present gaming as some sort of niche hobby for nerds and violent individuals, it's become clear over the years that those that partake in killing digital enemies on a regular basis, can be some of the most generous and heart warming out there.
Games can also be a great basis for a charity event, so over the weekend Summer Games Done Quick saw speed runners take on 160 titles to blast through them as quickly as possible. Those watching live and at home were encouraged to donate to the charity Doctors Without Borders and over $1.2 million was put down over the weekend.
The average donation was around $40, which is an impressive amount considering each of those that donated such a wad of cash could have spent that on a brand new game. Instead they chose to send it to a very worthwhile organisation.
The biggest donation during the event was a massive $21,500, but chances are anyone donating such an amount wouldn't be wanting extra press on them rather than the event, which is the true champion of this story.
There's a Youtube channel with all of the streams if you'd like to watch any of them, with a full gamut of games 'run, from Chrono Trigger, right through to Hello Kitty: Roller Rescue.
