Splatoon has become a big success on the Wii U (despite its exclusivity), so much so in-fact that it's even seen some people draw from its plus points in the hope that they will inspire other game developers to take them on. Things like making the experience about something other than shooting one another, making the game bright and colorful and adding innovative movement mechanics.
That's what the Team Fortress 2 modders headed by DrLilRobot have attempted to do to the free game. It's still a work in progress so there is still much to do, but at this early stage it already has paint guns, the ability to turn into squids and a home base to protect.
Of course, being a work in progress, it is all a little ropey compared to Nintendo's very polished third person shooter, but it's heading in the right direction. Painting the floor is possible (though it only happens in grid-like squares) and players can swim through their painted areas - though they also seem to be able to swim through their enemy's to some extent too.
It's not clear at this time whether the engine will allow for such fluid, fluid dynamics as Splatoon has, but this is certainly a valiant effort by the modders.
Does this make up for those of you that don't have a Wii U but want to play some Splatoon?
