It feels poetic that Total War: Warhammer should be currently edging towards release, when Games Workshop has just imploded its long running fantasy Old World and replaced it with the near-universally decried multi-world Age of Sigmar; which feels to many like Space Marines in a medieval setting.
Fortunately for those of us that miss the age old setting, Creative Assembly looks to be doing an excellent job of porting over the tabletop experience to the PC, bringing not only the right aesthetic look to the armies of the Old World, but the feel of them too.
In this 10 minute pre-scripted battle sequence, we see the Orcs of the World's Edge mountains come crashing over the hill to face off against the Carl Franz and his Empire cohorts. There are great swords standing proud, cannons and rocket carriages launching explosive rounds and Wyvern mounted warbosses galore - and that's just a handful of the unique units on show.
Although a Total War game at heart, this Warhammer rendition really makes use of the fantastical units in the game's world. Balance may be a little harder than usual, as there is no rock/paper/scissor mechanic to fall back on - there's no telling whether those wolf riders will be able to take out those peasants - and there's magic to consider too.
It's all barbaric, silly and epic, which is what Warhammer is all about. It's not clear if Games Workshop has forgotten that with its new direction, but clearly Creative Assembly hasn't, which bodes well for when the game is finally released somtime in 2016.
