Upcoming Total War: Warhammer III update lets Dwarfs build tall

Total War: Warhammer III has only just pushed out a big update for the Dwarfs, but apparently Creative Assembly isn't done with its most diminutive race, as an upcoming update is going to add the option for Dwarfs to expand further beneath their holds.

News in brief

  • Patch 5.2 will add The Deeps to the Dwarfs
  • More additions include a Chaos Cult rework, and new locations
  • A Cathay update is mentioned, but not expanded on

The new Dwarfs feature is called "The Deeps", and expands on the idea that the Dwarfs settlements are generally built on top of a vast underground network that have gradually been lost to time and various gribbly things that lurk underground. The Deeps adds the ability for Dwarf factions to spend a lot of money and time unlocking and systematically clearing sections of that underground real estate. The upshot of which means more room for buildings and buffs and all that good stuff. This gives Dwarfs a reason to "build tall" — a term for when you concentrate on building up and upgrading a smaller number of settlements, rather than spreading out quickly across a lot of ground.

Also included in the patch will be a hefty sounding rework to Chaos Cults. In the past, Chaos Cults would spring up around the map anywhere where there was enough corruption to do so — only that tended to mean it wasn't a particularly engaging or interactive system. The new Cults will be purposefully spread by players, and use a Discoverability system like Skaven undercities. So keep your cultists' heads down until you're ready to reveal them to the world, and watch out for heroes who can track down your devoted.

Unusual locations are the third addition mentioned in the blog post, and seem similar to the Landmark buildings we've already seen in the game. Unusual locations, though, spawn at seemingly random locations, and will have decisions tied to them. Anything that adds a little extra spice to another Empire playthrough is fine by us.

A change to Cathay's Ivory Road mechanic was also mentioned, but not expanded on yet. It's possible the details of this are still being ironed out, or are maybe so big they require a post all of their own. Either way, we're excited to know more.
