Valve often runs Alternate Reality Games (ARG) on Steam, having gamers dig through audio files, find passwords, secret logins and various other clues to send them down a rabbit hole that eventually leads to something cool. Something worth finding.
During the recent winter sale though, that didn't happen. There were all of the usual clues, with gamers finding out secret passwords hidden in the Christmas Noire comic and a secret login showing up if you looked for "search," in the Steam search box. But if you managed to dig through all of it and find the final surprise, all you got was a Steam achievement called Red Herring.
It's been speculated that this means there is a real secret still out there somewhere, but clearly others were still a little disappointed by what was at the end of the trail.

Jokes on you Valve. Especially since there's a Half Life 3 logo hidden in the wrapping paper.
