There's no denying that the DOOM reboot has been one of the most successful releases of the year, returning the genre to its fast-paced, horror-action roots, rather than the slightly more horror orientated Doom 3. But did you know that there was doing to be a Doom 4?

id Software thought it ended up too much like Call of Duty, so scrapped it in 2011, after more than three years of full development.

This news came to light in the latest episode of NoClip's ongoing DOOM documentary series, DOOM Resurrected, in which producer Marty Stratton explained how the team felt that the game just wasn't that Doom-like. In fact it was internally christened Call of Doom, for how much it felt like the Activision shooter.

"It was much closer to something like that type of game. A lot more cinematic; a lot more story to it," he said, as per Gamespot.

"A lot more characters around you that you were with throughout the course of the game. Definitely a different setting – it took place on Earth."

The game had players taking cover, shooting zombies and being a bit more tactical in their play, rather than moving at high speed and blasting apart the various denizens of hell - which is exactly what Doom is supposed to be and what DOOM captured so well.

Not everyone thought it was bad, and in fact some of the staff who worked on it still wished more people had been able to play Doom 4, but ultimately they are happy that DOOM has become such a favoured game in 2016, more than 20 years on from the initial Doom's release.
