At the 3PM GMT (10AM EST) mark today, the reviews from Rockstar's latest magnum opus began to hit. As you might expect, they're rather positive in tone, but how well did it do when we get down to the nitty gritty?
gives it five stars out of five, praising the game's technical achievements but highlighting a few silly bugs.
Kotaku gave it a "Yes," must play and said it was mechanically the best GTA ever. Though it did say that the storytelling was a bit weak.
Eurogamer gave it a 9/10 and praised the scope of the game and its sheer multitude of exciting things to explore, but said the story was lacking.
awarded it a 10/10 score and described it as a "staggering technical achievement," and "the best looking GTA ever," but also described the story as vague with no virtuous characters.
Joystiq gives is a 4.5/5 stars, suggesting that the last half star was held back mostly because of the story not having time to evolve. With three protagonists, it's hard to empathise. However, the game world is described as showpiece of how a virtual world can be.
Flickeringmyth described it as a must play, but said the gunplay controls could be better.
Polygon praises the environment and makes the case that the story is actually quite good, but suggested that it might be nice to see a strong and likeable female character in a GTA game.
IGN gave it a 10/10 too, describing it as a gaming masterpiece.
So that's about it so far, but the reviews will no doubt pour in over the next few days. Have any of you got your hands on an early release version? If so, what do you think?
