Boss Key, the developer of Lawbreakers has announced that following the continued problems with a low player base, it is moving on from the multiplayer shooter and is hard at work on a brand new game, with new creative leads at the helm of whatever it is they're working on.
Lawbreakers might have been a game where the rules of gravity didn't apply, but it might have been more effective to call it a game that was out of time. Specifically, it was a AAA shooter title in a world where those kinds of games really struggle to make a return on investment unless they are part of mega, mainstream franchises like Call of Duty. It was a genre-defining effort like the original Unreal Tournament or Quake, in an era where people don't really play those kinds of games anymore.
That meant that although the game was praised for its visuals, for fast, intuitive combat, it just never picked up the playerbase it needed. Gamers missed the colorful characters and unique abilities of games like Overwatch and the MOBA scene and with a high-skill ceiling and learning curve, it was difficult for gamers used to the run and gun gameplay of Call of Duty to really get to grips with it. So now Boss Key is moving on.
"The fact is LawBreakers failed to find enough of an audience to generate the funds necessary to keep it sustained in the manner we had originally planned for and anticipated," the official announcement reads. "And while a pivot to free-to-play may seem like easiest change to make, a change of this magnitude takes publishing planning and resources to do it."
"The team here has worked hard on this game over the past three and a half years and our studio is determined to give this game the second life it deserves," Boss Key continued. "However, between now and then, we cannot sit idle. We will continue to support the game in its current state, but we also need to focus on other projects with fresh creative leaders. We have been working on something new and we can’t wait to share more about it! It’s a passion project that we’re in complete control of."
Details of the new project remain non-existent for now and it's also unknown what kind of "second-life," Boss Key hopes to give Lawbreakers. That may be converting it to a free to play system, but that's hardly easy.
