Microsoft is discontinuing the recently-released Kinect for Windows sensor.
Apparently, the desktop version of Kinect proved to be more popular than Microsoft had expected and the company was not able to meet demand in some markets. Instead of increasing supply, Microsoft decided to focus its efforts on the main Kinect for Xbox SKU and provide support for PC through an adapter cable.
Microsoft is stressing that Kinect + adapter cable is "functionally identical" to the discontinued Kinect for Windows SKU.
Microsoft will continue to support existing Kinect for Windows units.
