Star Wars Outlaws has come out, and it's been … well, it's a good, middle of the road game that happens to be set in a galaxy far, far away. Reviews are placing the game as a solid but flawed entry in the Star Wars universe, but creative director Julian Gerighty has expressed disappointment with those scores, and has committed to working on the game for some time to come.
News in brief
- Scores for Star Wars Outlaws sit around the middle 70s
- Creative director vows to keep working on the game to improve it
- It's a great outlook for an already good game
Recent months have seen the story of Concord play out, as a game that was poorly received and largely ignored on release, to then be completely pulled by publishers barely two months after release. So with that in mind, it's nice to see higher ups at Massive Entertainment putting themselves behind Star Wars Outlaws and pledging to improve it.
This statement comes from a GamesRadar interview with Massive's creative director, Julian Gerighty. In it, he expresses disappointment with the Metacritic reviews that fall into the mid-70s, but pledges to "never [...] stop improving it". While he obviously walks back the hyperbole moments later, it's worth savoring the fact that Massive has an interest in making sure Outlaws is supported going forwards, with fixes for any issues being at the top of their shopping list.
It's important to note that 7 out of 10 is rarely a bad score from most reviewers. It tends to equal a good game that falters in a few areas; but it's rarely seen that way. Fans always want their game to be the best thing ever, while shareholders tend to see anything short of the best selling game of all time as a failure. Star Wars Outlaws is clearly a success story at this point, regardless of scores, and any improvements will take an already good game into the range of becoming great.
